Nowadays, coffee become trend more than pas years before. It shows by the coffee bean consumption in Indonesia was 96 thousand tons in 2000 and consumption increased by more than 174% at 270 thousand tons by 2016 and continue increasing (Databoks.co.id). Increasing coffee consumption in coffee-producing countries, such as Indonesia, will reap several benefits such as: raising awareness among producers about quality importance, creating value-added products practice, and encouraging growth for small and medium-sized businesses. On the other hand, with the huge amount of coffee beans, there are a lot of the waste produced, too.
The coffee bean is from the coffee bean come from the coffee fruit. Besides the beans, coffee cherry is also part of coffee fruit. In 100 kg of coffee fruit, it mean, there are 45 kg of coffee bean and the other 55 kg is coffee cherry (Pup). Unfortunately, most of farmers still utilize the coffee bean for the revenue instead of utilize the coffee cherry too.
For instance in, the coffee production of Suntenjaya Village, Lembang is about 20 tons in 2018. The total revenue generated from 9 tons of coffee beans acquired from Suntenjaya coffee production was Rp120 million. Even though the total revenue is high, but they also produce a large quantity of coffee waste, with around 11 tons coffee cherries were thrown away. Every year, they separate the coffee cherries from the beans, which is then (typically) discarded during the coffee production process. Meanwhile, according to the research done by Biorefinery Society (BIOS) – a techno-social start-up company from ITB, coffee cherries can contain lots of antioxidant, benefits for the health and good for beauty skin. It show the coffee cherry has the economical value.
Although a large proportion of coffee cherries goes to waste before it can generate any economic benefit. Suntenjaya farmers often don’t know how to implement the best practices, affecting the quantity and quality of dried cherry coffee production. Besides that, the lack of market information and low farm-gate price also make the low rate of dried cherry coffee utilization. "We don't even know anything that the coffee cherry has the economical value like that before you ( our team, college students) told us" Said one of local farmer in Suntenjaya Village.
Therefore, we - Biesha Bumi Pertiwi - found that processed the coffee cherries into several products can increase Suntenjaya farmer’s income more than 15% per year Surely, if we can utilize these coffee cherries optimally, it can be a great opportunity to create sustainable employment and income opportunities for coffee farm. We collaborate, empower, and encourage the local farmers of Suntenjaya Village by doing collaboration to process the coffee cherry. We started to create Authentic Cascara Tea which hold brand of KAMALA.
