🔥 HOT November Nordic/Baltic Tech News, Events and Opportunities

Dear Community,

WELCOME TO OUR NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER!

The dark November brought a flurry of light too (and snow!) across the Nordics, and remarkable achievements in our community; international events celebrating Nordic/Baltic tech entrepreneurship, our strong commitment to and focus on diversity and inclusion, real, tangible results and impact from how we help our startups and scaleups scale, raise capital and expand internationally, in collaboration with long-term and new Nordic and international partners, mentors, coaches, TNA Ambassadors and our investor community. In November, we welcomed the City of Stockholm as new partner, adding to our partnerships with the capital cities in Denmark, Norway and Finland. We added a high number of new capital raising tech co's and investors to TNA Invest and our Diversity Venture Fund, cemented our close collaboration with the Canadian and British Embassies, hosting our Access to Canada and UK Market Access programmes, received U.S. government funding for our U.S. Market Access program, brought successful 'home-grown' tech entrepreneurs who have been there, done that, and got the t-shirt, in front of many of you, to share know-how, experience and practical advice on how they have expanded and raised capital internationally, opening up new opportunities in AI and access to capital, as well as presenting cash prizes, generously donated in memory of someone important to us at one of our flagship events.

Thanks to everyone who supports our mission to accelerate inclusive Nordic/Baltic tech startup/scaleup growth, capital raise and international expansion across the region. Keep warm and enjoy!

STOP PRESS - TECH NORDIC ADVOCATES IN THE MEDIA

This month TechSavvy - Danmarks største startup-medie have written a fantastic article on our event - "The Critical Case for Beyond Gender Diversity" at the Digital Tech Summit in Copenhagen.

Titled "Beyond Gender Diversity: Entrepreneurs from around the world showcase at Digital Tech Summit", the article highlights that Denmark’s startup ecosystem has a significant diversity issue, with only 0.1% of investments going to female entrepreneurs and very limited representation of neurodivergent individuals, seniors, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ people, and ethnic minorities. This lack of inclusion hinders innovation by overlooking valuable perspectives needed to solve global challenges.

To address this, our event focussed on fostering inclusivity in startups - featuring expert speakers, pitches from startups led by young entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds, and interactive discussions - with an overall goal to highlight how diverse experiences drive impactful, tech-based solutions to issues like climate change and inequality, encouraging Denmark to embrace diversity - beyond gender. Read the expert opinion from our CEO and Founder, Jeanette Carlsson, in the full article here. (English & Danish)

More media coverage featuring Tech Nordic Advocates (For Danish readers)

In her latest op-ed, with the translated title: "Karen Ellemann can unlock the potential of the Nordics' most expensive coffee club with support for digital innovation" featured in Altinget.dk - our CEO and Founder, Jeanette Carlsson, asks some important questions of The Nordic Council of Ministers and The Nordic Council, in particular, towards the current Secretary General, Karen Ellemann, who once referred to the organisation, prior to working there, as "...the Nordics most expensive coffee club".

With a new national innovation center and a digitisation plan on the way in Denmark, and a Norwegian ambition to be the world's most digitised country, it is obvious for The Nordic Council of Ministers and The Nordic Council to step up and deliver. One thing that we can all agree on, to quote the article... "There should (perhaps) be (a little) more focus on financing specific initiatives across the Nordics, so that new Nordic innovation, products and solutions can be developed, as well as the scaling of Nordic startups and the promotion of Nordic competitiveness and the Nordic brand internationally." Read the full article here.

Congratulations to Anine Stang for her Op-Ed in vg.no highlighting the broader issues of Norwegian’s new wealth tax.

The taxes that are killing our future
"Many have bought the claims that the wealth and exit tax only affects the very richest. I believed this too. Until I started my own company."

This article raises a critical point about the challenges faced by entrepreneurs in Norway, particularly women, who are often highlighted as essential to the nation’s future economic growth. While there is widespread political rhetoric about the need for more innovation and entrepreneurial diversity, the reality described here underscores a disconnect between ambitions and policies.

The argument that Norwegian taxes actively hinder growth is compelling. If the country aspires to produce globally recognized companies like Spotify or Klarna, its tax system must evolve to support rather than stifle entrepreneurial endeavors. Talents and ambitions already exist, but without a conducive policy framework, these efforts risk being undermined. Read the full article here and the follow up article here.

Culture Intelligence found the most important values in the Norwegian business world - now they will turn them into a business
Congratulations to Tone Ringstad for being feature in Shifter, talking about raising her funding round - She says: Customers are crucial in capital rounds!

She states: "In 2023-2024, many companies have made structural changes, and this year it is time for implementation and to build a culture that makes this happen. We are fortunate to have larger and more mature customers this year, and we can show that our product brings real change. That's why we also succeed in raising money!" Read the full article here.

Congratulations to Donna Kastrati for her featured interview in investornytt
In the article, Donna shares her background and motivations for starting her current business - only one in three who start a company today are women, and only one in five who set up a joint-stock company are women. Donna wants to change this through her company, HER.

Also in the article, Donna shares her personal journey as an entrepreneur with HER, new partnerships, ambitions for international expansion, and some big things on the horizon in 2025. Read the full article here.

Thanks again to everyone who made this such a high-value and impactful session, where we really did all learn and appreciate why Canada is such a fantastic market to scale high-growth Norwegian tech companies.

The final day of October was filled with innovation, inspiration, and a commitment to diversity at the Digital Tech Summit, for our event - "The Critical Case for Beyond Gender Diversity" where we were joined by brilliant minds like Marie Louise Pollmann-Larsen, Team Leader, DTU Skylab, Af Malhotra, CEO of Diversity Economics AI, and Charlotte Søgaard from COWI.

An event, we hope and believe, cemented once and for all the CRITICAL NEED for INCLUSION of everyone in entrepreneurship, irrespective of gender, race, background, orientation, age, neuro-diversity or physical disposition. Not because it sounds or looks good but because anything else is plain stupid.

Af shared invaluable insights on the importance of expanding our focus beyond gender diversity to embrace diversity in all its forms. He emphasised the power of data-driven approaches and introduced us to ReN, a powerful tool for quantifying and addressing diversity challenges.

Charlotte highlighted how their commitment to "shaping a sustainable and liveable world" includes a focus on diversity in their engineering projects. From urban planning to hospitals and transportation, COWI is integrating diversity considerations to ensure their solutions meet the needs of diverse communities.

We were also thrilled to hear from the "Next Gen" of innovators, as diverse entrepreneurs from various corners of the world pitched brilliant solutions to global challenges in health, environment and more.

The panel discussion on "Beyond Gender Diversity" moderated by Sam Jalaei, Managing Partner at Magnusson Denmark, was a highlight. Through workshops like this, we are helping entrepreneurs build confidence in sharing their successes - whether during pitch sessions or general awareness-building activities.

We are happy to offer this workshop to our programme founders, which has impacted over 550,000 participants in 180 countries since its inception at Google in 2016. These workshops equip individuals with the tools they need to effectively promote themselves, both personally and professionally.
